2017 School Year with DataWise in Full Swing- PLC's

My takeaways from Data Wise were many ... the journey this year ...
The focus of our efforts this school year ... and our barriers.
  • Identifying our school wide problem based on Data- We realize that we have an emphasis on district directed assessments. Teachers comply with the request of giving these assessments as well as students complying with taking the assessments. Teachers inquire as to whether these are the correct assessments and also they wonder if students take these assessments seriously. This creates the following problems. Teachers do not understand how to use these assessments to drive their instruction so they are simply a compliance piece. There is a disconnect between what is being taught and what is being tested. This also results in data that is not clean.

Data Wise PLC Focus for 2017-2018: Building Assessment Literacy & Analyzing Data

Plan: Grade levels will rotate through on a 6 day rotation seeing one grade level each day.

How will we manage this process? Students dismiss daily at 3:05 p.m. Each grade level will not attend dismissal on their PLC day. Teacher teams will report promptly at 3:10 and the meeting will go until 3:45.

IMPORTANT to consider when we have such limited time. We have a rolling Agenda that is shared by each teacher. The agenda is created ahead of time on Google Docs.

Identified Roles: Time Keeper, Note Taker, Next Steps Tracker.

Meetings have the Following NORMS:

Data Wise Norms:

  • Ground statements in evidence
  • Assume positive intentions
  • Stick to protocols and hear all voices
  • Start and end on time
  • Be here now
  • Take an Inquiry Stance

Meeting Components:

1. Review Norms
2. Ice Breaker related to current meeting - 5 mins.
3. Review any "Next Steps" from last meeting.
4. Review the objective for the meeting - 3 mins.
5. Meeting - 22 mins.
6. Plus/Delta for each meeting - 5 mins.

It is very important that you respect the framework for the meeting to maximize your time. Teachers should always leave with a "Take Away."

My journey in understanding the Data Wise process ...

Dr. Tina Stancil attended the Data Wise Seminar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.  I am so grateful that she has brought this back to our school. In previous blogs, I referenced Wynnebrook Elementary, a school that has a similar demographic. Wynnebrook was a failing school only 16 years ago.  The principal, Mr. Pegg, worked to build capacity and made the grade for three consecutive years on student gains.  The following years showed a raise in proficiency, which resulted in a Florida School Grade of A being assigned for the past 13 years. One of the ideas that Mr. Pegg attributes this growth to is PLC/Planning sessions with administrators being in attendance with each grade level each week. This experience, of course, began our conversations in the 2016 school year as to HOW we could make this happen at Oneco.  Dr. Stancil reworked our school schedule to back our "specials" rotation up to end every day at 2:05 p.m.  This allowed a free space in ...
